BEwell
building engagement and well-being through
electronic life-like learning

digital course

13 weeks of engaging and practical well-being education

Who takes care of students' mental health?

BEwell does.

A digital course that combines scientific methods of positive psychology with modern technologies to support students in personal growth, navigating university life, and building their overall well-being. It offers tailored education for each student, focusing on ten key areas of life – such as relationships, financial security, health, and authenticity. With a sense of humor, gamification, and the guidance of AI-powered avatars, BEWell brings more than just fun: it gives students the opportunity to discover and build their own unique path toward a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Every student should have access to well-being education for credit and microcredentials. BEwell (Building Engagement and Well-being Through Electronic Lifelike Learning) is a full-semester digital well-being course that stays with students for life. After finishing the course, students continue to access their personal AI well-being specialist. An emotionally intelligent avatar based on the real university BEwell educator. They gain entry to a growing BEwell graduate community and access follow-up tools connected to smart wearables like Oura rings or watches, personalizing their mental health care in a real time. We combine human warmth, deep psychology, and generative AI while rigorously testing impact. Our upcoming clinical trial compares three groups (human-led, avatar-led, and control), using subjective and objective measures like salivary and hair cortisol to demonstrate that avatar-led courses can be as effective, and even more personalized, than those led by human instructors.

what problems BEWell solves

According to Harvard GSE, UNESCO, OECD, Gallup-Lumina, ACHA, HMN, NCES, JED, and EDI, 76% of students report mental distress, 28–41% experience clinical anxiety, 36–41% depression, 14% have contemplated suicide, and nearly one-third are at risk of dropping out. In a lecture hall of 40 students: 6 have considered suicide, 15 feel depressed or anxious, and 13 may not graduate. BEwell is our response: a 13-week, evidence-based digital well-being course led by an emotionally intelligent AI avatar, embedded into university curricula. With scripts written based on the Well-being and Success for University Students book (Kočí & Donaldson, 2024), BEwell helps students thrive emotionally and academically, reduces dropout and burnout, and equips universities to respond to today’s mental health crisis.

technology behind BEwell

Our core technology is the Uniwellsity Platform, a cloud-based adaptive learning environment accessed exclusively via students’ institutional email through secure authentication and university single sign-on login. The platform serves as a stand-alone study space or integrates with existing LMS systems through seamless cloud redirection. At its heart is the BEwell Studio, where educators script 13-week well-being courses delivered by emotionally intelligent avatar based on real university well-being teacher. BEwell collects multimodal data including self-reports, behavioral input, and biometric signals from wearables to personalize care in real time. As part of the lifelike learning innovation, it is addressing UN SDGs through Human Activity Recognition, adaptive learning and memory consolidation, and visual cues for enhanced robot intelligibility. We are developing our own well-being AI engine trained on curated and physiological data to detect stress and support students proactively.

our competitive advantage

BEwell operates in a competitive space shaped by e-learning (Coursera, Udemy), mental health apps (Headspace), and educational platforms (TED-Ed). Yet none combine academic credit, AI-driven interaction, and science-based well-being education. Our key advantage is integration. BEwell is embedded into university curricula, not external. It delivers accredited courses via emotionally intelligent avatars based on real professors, offering scalable, human-like care. Grounded in the PERMA5 model and validated through subjective and biological metrics (e.g. cortisol levels), BEwell unites psychology, AI, and education into a lifelong support system. It fits institutional systems, ensures data privacy, and offers real-time personalisation. No current competitor matches this blend of credibility, adaptability, and emotional depth. This hybrid model positions BEwell to disrupt both EdTech and HealthTech markets while setting a new global standard in evidence-based emotional learning.

our team

our diverse team comprises academics, educators, researchers, and practical education specialists, united by a shared passion for working with students and a commitment to innovation in digital learning. the team is led by Dr. Jana Kočí, Ph.D., an expert in academic well-being in the Czech Republic who is internationally recognized for her work. with 18 years of experience in academia, she brings unique expertise and practical insights to the project.

global aspects of BEWell

advanced technologies make the learning process more targeted, efficient, and adaptable to student needs, market changes, and new regulations compared to static, traditional educational approaches. our target users include universities and students worldwide, primarily in Europe, the USA, and Asia. the project builds on global partnerships with Charles University, 4EU+ alliance universities, and institutions in the USA and Asia, ensuring culturally sensitive and scalable solutions. to date, there is no comparable product on the market while an emerging trend shows that students increasingly prioritize institutions that provide quality campus life and well-being support over institutional prestige.

university students represent a highly specific target group, systematically underserved by many institutions and almost entirely overlooked by the private sector, which has yet to fully explore the potential of modern educational methods. universities often struggle to address student well-being effectively, presenting us with a unique opportunity to become a key partner for universities globally and a dominant force in supporting university students’ mental health and satisfaction. our global expansion is underpinned by the platform’s scalability and adaptability to various cultures and languages.

about the course

who leads the journey for students?

image.png

our program is guided by Dr. Jana Koci, Ph.D., a well-being researcher and educator at Charles University and the author of the book Well-being and Success for University Students (Koci & Donaldson, 2024). through her avatar—so lifelike it’s nearly indistinguishable from the real person—Jana will personally greet students, introduce topics, and offer support throughout the semester. every three weeks, students will also participate in live discussions with Jana, who is known for her love of students and her ability to create a fun, loving, and safe space. these discussions are engaging and highly enjoyable, offering students a unique opportunity to connect, share, and grow in a supportive environment.

BEwell Didactic Principles: Integrating AI with Human-Centered Learning

The BEwell course, guided by our AI companion WellBot, offers a fundamentally new approach to education—one that is maximally tailored to the needs of each student. Thanks to artificial intelligence, we are able to track students’ real-time reactions, feedback, and engagement throughout the course. As a result, learning is no longer an averaged experience but a personal journey—like not serving everyone seven dumplings, but exactly the number each person actually needs.

This course is custom-made, efficient, and deeply rooted in student motivation. Each lesson begins with a clear preview of what students can expect and is enriched with real-life stories. Jana Kočí draws upon more than 20 years of experience in education and 15 years of working directly with students and schoolchildren. The course is also firmly grounded in evidence—every step and every idea is supported by research.

Evidence-Informed Learning and Multisensory Engagement As an evidence-informed program, BEwell is built on scientific findings, not myths. Contemporary research shows that the idea of fixed learning styles is outdated—the most effective learning occurs when we engage all sensory channels and work in an integrated, holistic way.

Therefore, our course purposefully combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimuli. We use illustrative materials, audio recordings, and practical exercises designed to quite literally get students out of their chairs. This multisensory approach significantly increases both the effectiveness of learning and long-term retention.

Dual Coding and Visible Learning We employ the principle of dual coding—a proven technique for efficient learning. Key information is delivered through multiple channels at once—for example, when explaining the definition of well-being, we reinforce it visually with a graphic diagram. This combination of verbal and visual representation helps students better understand and retain the material.

We also build on the principle of visible learning—learning should be observable. In our course, the learning process is tangible and understandable not only for the instructor but, more importantly, for the student. Every step a student takes is clearly structured, reflected upon, and linked to a specific goal.

Developing Key Competencies and Metacognition

The course intentionally develops key competencies, especially self-reflection, which forms the foundation of sustainable well-being. The more students strengthen their skills in the area of mental wellness, the more naturally they develop metacognition—the ability to think about their own thinking, decision-making, and behavior.

Paraphrasing for Clarity In the course, we deliberately work with the technique of paraphrasing—important ideas are conveyed repeatedly in different ways. Key messages are not stated just once; they are gradually developed through definitions, examples, and personal stories. This increases clarity and comprehension.

Action-Oriented and Personalized Learning
Our approach is action-oriented—we emphasize activity and interaction. We do not rely solely on knowledge transmission, though it has its place and is used in the course. We go further: we support students in discovering key insights and skills on their own, at their own pace, and through their own path.

We assign concrete tasks and set clear objectives, while still allowing space for individual approaches. In this way, we help students develop the competence to actively shape their well-being—not as abstract knowledge, but as a personal skill they can apply in their everyday lives.

Community Support and Human Interaction

BEwell combines personalized instruction with community support. Thanks to the AI guide—WellBot—students experience the course as a form of one-on-one coaching, tailored in time and pace to their needs. As the avatar of a real university educator, WellBot delivers content authentically and clearly.

However, once a month, we also meet in live sessions—with a human facilitator and a group of students. These sessions provide space for reflection, sharing experiences, and collaborative problem-solving based on course assignments. They remind us that while WellBot is a powerful tool, true understanding and growth are rooted in real human connection.

Positive and Authentic Teaching

In designing BEwell, we placed strong emphasis on the instructor’s positive and authentic approach, which directly influences students’ mood and motivation. Mirror neurons, which play a crucial role in empathy and social learning, allow positive emotions from the teacher to be transferred to the student. Studies show that a teacher’s positive attitude can significantly affect students’ emotional state, thereby enhancing their engagement and learning effectiveness.

Empathy and Respect for Individual Experience

We also place great emphasis on empathy and respect for each student’s individual experience. When a student shares uncertainty or difficulty, we never downplay their feelings. Instead, we respond with the question, “How can I help you?”—a clear signal that we take their experience seriously and are ready to support them.

Supporting Autonomy and Choice We also focus strongly on fostering student autonomy, a key factor in developing intrinsic motivation and overall well-being. According to Self-Determination Theory, autonomy is one of three essential psychological needs; when fulfilled, it leads to higher intrinsic motivation and more effective learning.

Enhancing Self-Efficacy and Managing Cognitive Load We also systematically build students’ self-efficacy while effectively managing cognitive load. Self-efficacy—the belief in one's ability to succeed—is a crucial determinant of learning success and sustainable well-being.

Evidence-Based Feedback and Dialogic Teaching In BEwell, feedback is not limited to end-of-course evaluation; it is a continuous, integral part of the learning process. On the Uniwellsity platform, students can submit ongoing assignments, comment on peer contributions, and receive individual feedback from instructors.

We also apply the principles of dialogic teaching, which research shows to be more effective than the traditional IRF model (Initiation–Response–Feedback). We ask open-ended questions, encourage multiple viewpoints, teach conversation techniques, and promote a culture of respectful discussion.

Practical Techniques for Dialogic Learning Specific techniques we use to support dialogic learning include:

  • Think–Pair–Share

  • Reflective Circles

  • Higher-order questioning based on Bloom’s Taxonomy

  • Socratic dialogue

  • Argument mapping

  • Role-play and perspective-taking

  • Creative text interpretation

  • Reaction journaling

  • Discussion protocols

  • Peer feedback using assessment criteria

  • Silent conversation (written dialogue)

  • Rotating discussions

  • Structured small group interviews

  • “Four Corners” technique—choosing and defending a viewpoint

  • Dialogic summary instead of testing

Positive Expectations and the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

BEwell also intentionally applies the principle of the self-fulfilling prophecy—in its positive form. We recognize that teacher expectations significantly influence student performance and self-perception.

Differentiated Instruction

We also actively implement differentiated instruction by adapting the difficulty, format, and content of activities to accommodate diverse learners. Each student enters with different backgrounds, levels of preparedness, and preferred learning styles—and we view this diversity not as a challenge but as a natural part of the learning process.

Scaffolding Toward Independence

Another essential didactic principle consciously applied in BEwell is scaffolding—the gradual removal of support that allows students to transition from guided learning to full autonomy. This process significantly strengthens their ability to self-direct both their learning and well-being.

Think–Pair–Share for Social Learning

We also implement the Think–Pair–Share strategy, which effectively enhances both understanding and student engagement. This makes the learning experience more socially grounded and personally relevant.

Reducing Cognitive Load and Activating Prior Knowledge

We also intentionally reduce cognitive load. Drawing from cognitive load theory, we structure the content and flow of lessons to ensure that information is digestible and sustainable.

Each learning block begins with a conscious activation of prior knowledge. This strategy connects new information to what the student already knows, deepens understanding, and aids in long-term memory retention.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset and Embracing Mistakes

A core component of our approach is also the creation of a safe and supportive environment in which students are not afraid to make mistakes. The course actively fosters a growth mindset, based on the work of Carol Dweck.

Fostering Social Support and Community

A powerful element of BEwell is the intentional cultivation of social support, which is among the strongest predictors of well-being. Students can interact on the Uniwellsity platform between sessions—offering mutual support, sharing experiences, or arranging joint study sessions, Zoom calls, or leisure activities.

what do students think?

"What I appreciate the most is that this class, thanks to the teacher Jana's approach, became my favorite class. The lectures were playful, interactive and very entertaining. Thanks to teacher’s educating style, I memorized much more information compared to other classes. And what I really enjoyed was the final exam, which was in the form of a quiz, rather than test and it was a beautiful but also sad ending of this course."

"This class opened my eyes and helped me to change the perception of many parts of each individual's everyday life and impacts of those behaviors. This class influenced me a lot. Thank you."

"I appreciate everything, the class was mainly a great experience and I haven't been looking forward to going to school like I was for these classes for a long time. I wish I had more! Thank you for the new knowledge about health, which I manage to apply to my life to better manage the pressure of the 5th grade :)"

"Doctor Jana works with new educational methods, new educational programs, her classes are very inspiring.  She uses new communicational technologies, performs pleasant communication with students, performs helpfulness, desire to help. I appreciate cooperation of the teacher with students."

"Ms. doctor Jana is probably the most pleasant and the most passionate teacher at the university. Your enthusiasm, the speed of communication and the way you teach, this is how I would expect it in all the people who have to show future teachers how to teach. That is a pity that you're the first one I can say this about after four years at the university."

"Dr. Jana is able to transmit positive energy even across distance over distance learning. Her approach is amazing and I was excited about her classes. I may never have had experienced a more pleasant atmosphere in the class. There was a frequent interaction during lessons, we always received positive feedback, there was no stress... At the same time, the subject was very practical. There is nothing to complain about."

"I have nothing to complain about. Very well structured lectures. I have learned a lot during psychohygiene and well-being classes. Not only thanks to the interesting content of lectures but also thanks to Dr. Kočí's great approach."

"It was a pleasure to go to Ms. Jana's classes. She was always in a positive mood, the classes were well organized and thanks to the activities in the seminars I gathered a lot of practical activities that I can use in my practice. She always gladly accepted the students' opinion and whenever something was not clear to us, she explained it. The exam was very similar to the whole class - stress-free and enjoyable."

"I would like to commend Dr. Jana for the practical classes organization, and her human and kind approach. The practice was organizationally brilliant, and even though Ms. doctor had to deftly respond to the changes caused by the Covid pandemic, everything worked out smoothly. The class discussions were really rewarding, almost more than class observations itself."

"Ms. Kočí is the nicest person at the faculty, she can't even frown :) At first I was a bit skeptical about Leisure Time Pedagogy, but Ms. Kočí showed me that it doesn't pay off to judge in advance."

"Lessons were always very professionally prepared with a very nicely graphically presented presentations. Lessons were often based on practical tips, class discussion, etc. It did not happen to me for a long time that I would be able to keep my full attention during whole lectures like over these classes."

"Dr. Jana is absolutely amazing. She taught this class very well. Her interest in the topic was visible, so the lessons were very interesting and rewarding."

"Even though the participation on classes is optional, I have attended all 4 blocks this semester. For us students, optional participation does not mean that we do not have to go to seminars, but that we are trusted that we know ourselves that it is good to attend this course."

One of the best teacher’s course preparation.

"I really appreciate the energy and positive mood of Ms. Dr. Jana. She enriched me with many interesting findings, which I will definitely use in my professional and personal life, and in addition she always gave me a lot of positive energy."

"Very helpful approach of the teacher. I was extremely satisfied with how she communicates with the students and how she approaches them. A very beneficial class. Other teachers could be inspired on how to work with university students."

"I have nothing to complain about. Very well structured lectures. I have learned a lot during psychohygiene classes. Not only thanks to the interesting content of lectures but also thanks to Dr. Jana's great approach."
